Aluminium Louver

An aluminium louver is a protective window covering which allows air and light passage and keeps away rain and sunshine. Aluminium louvers control airflow in an enclosed area or a processed system. Louver belongs to the category damper and consists of parallel blades inside a duct. Aluminium louver is highly versatile, compact, lightweight and has comparatively less leakage.

Aluminium Louvers are mainly used to keep out snow or rain and provide ventilation. It is installed on the top of roof holes mainly in spacious kitchens, and previously has the shape of a lantern. Earlier aluminium louvers merely had a barrel, but later on, it was produced in the form of a human face. All the smoke and steam while cooking can easily pass through the eyes and mouth of the face. The angle can either be adjusted or fixed.

Louvers are made of aluminium, wood, glass or even metal. It can be opened and closed with motorized operators, metal lever or even with pulleys. Louvers prove to be beneficial for areas that have the risk of bushfire by resisting the tendency of radiant heat, flame or burning embers.

Aluminium louver guarantees 80-100% visual screening without obstructing airflow. Some of the places that require an Aluminium louver are roof-top, substations, equipment enclosures and garbage room.

Types of Aluminium Louver

Operable Louver- Shields the intake of air and openings of the exhaust. This type of aluminium louver is designed so as to facilitate opening and closing of blades. An electric actuator is supplied along with an operable louver.

Air-measuring louver- The vertical blades of this louver are close to each other, and prevent water from seeping inside.

Stationery Louver- This type of Aluminium louver is composed of an airfoil or angled blades, which are ideal for soundproofing and gives protection from extreme weather conditions. Stationary louvers provide design flexibility and prevent rain infiltration if used in the ambient condition, with the exception of windy rain.

Considered as an economical choice among its counterparts, a stationary louver provides high free area resistance as well. Stationary louvers are of 2 types.

  1. Drainable Blade Louvers- Drainable louvers shield the intake of air and give great water penetration characteristics when compared to other stationary louvers. In each louver blade, the louver incorporates a drain gutter on the edges. The water escapes through the louver sill, which got collected in the blade drain gutter.
  2. Non-Drainable Blade Louvers- These louvers are manufactured either in the J or K style blade. Applications which don’t concern water infiltration should not use these types of Aluminium louver. With a non-drainable blade louver, installed into the place where you need it, it allows essential design flexibility.
  3. Sight Proof louvers- This type of Aluminium Louver is distinctive with the chevron-style louver blade it has and limits visual access with respect to any angle. It acts as a screen to conceal equipment, and is available in two configurations- drainable and non-drainable.

Aluminum Fixed Louver Dubai

Adjustable Louvers- It consists of airfoil blades, which is packed tightly.

Combination Louvers- If static pressure is applied to one side of the blades, it will open, and opens completely, if pressure is applied from the other side.

Louver Usage in Infrastructure

Louver windows have the ability to resist the pressure caused by cyclonic conditions. Places prone to cyclones have louver windows. Louvers have wide usage as flood openers, containing flaps that move, besides letting floodwater to flow in and out of a building. This alleviates any architectural damage caused to the walls due to flood.

Benefits of Aluminium Louver

Durability- When compared to other metals, such as copper and steel, aluminium is lightweight and sturdy. This property when combined with durability, is the reason for its higher strength-to-weight ratio.

Flexibility- With its property of flexibility, aluminium can be shaped to meet the customer requirement, and without any trouble just fits to the space. On the basis of the ventilation system needed, different types of louvers can be made using Aluminium.

Eco-friendly- Since Aluminium doesn’t lose its physical properties, it is often reused again and again. Being 100% recyclable, there emerges no need to dump aluminium on a landfill. Aluminium louvers have great sustainability and are energy efficient.

Aesthetics- Aluminium louver needs little or no maintenance. Aluminium maintains its presentation as it is, since it is resistant to corrosion. With the right color and finish, an aluminium louver can aesthetically improve the beauty of any building.

The rising demand for sustainable building materials can be attributed to the increase in the importance given to an eco-friendly lifestyle. Aluminium Louver is a great example of this and is a comparatively good option for ventilation. If there is a sustainable way to reduce both cooling and heating cost, then louvers do it perfectly. Moreover, aluminium louver checks the climate and allows fresh air to seep in while releasing stale air. Aluminium louver will be a great addition to your home, considering the several advantages it has.

Sand Trap Louver

A sand trap louver proves to be beneficial in areas with extreme pollution. It prevents sand and large dust particles from entering the air intake unit. In the desert area or sandy places, a sand trap louver is used as ventilation in generator rooms, warehouses, parking areas.

The vertical sections and holes meant for sand drainage make sure that the louver is maintenance-free. The sand trap louver is designed in such a way that a pair of U channels are arranged parallel with each other, acting as a barrier for sand or dust particles. A sand trap louver can be installed in areas with intake air velocity below 1m/sec.

Benefits of Sand Trap Louver

  • While installing, it is suspended in such a way that it prevents the entry of sand particles into the filter. Thus it prevents the accumulation of sand particles with time.
  • Requires occasional cleaning, since it has sufficient capacity to store an enormous amount of dust accumulating on it.
  • Conventional filters are sensitive and the airflow will be obstructed with dust particles. A sand trap louver prevents the entry of dust into the duct system by purifying it in the start itself.
  • Up to 90% efficiency and design flexibility
  • Withstands extreme weather conditions.
  • Tends to last long since it’s made of extruded Aluminium and resists corrosion
  • Great finishing
  • Self-cleaning mechanism
  • Bird and insect screens are available. Also prevents the entry of large objects, besides the entry of dust particles.
  • Improves aesthetics

Characteristics of Sand Trap Louver

The features to be considered, when designing the sand trap louver are-

  • The sand trap louver should be fixed such that it shouldn’t be less than 1.0m above the ground level.
  • It should be sized so that the velocity goes no more than 1.75m/s
  • The louver should have a self-cleaning mechanism, and it’s base should have holes for that purpose.
  • Pressure drop in 2 meter per second
  • Average face velocity shouldn’t be more than 2 Pascal
  • Should have a powder-coated finish

Working Principle of a Sand Trap Louver

Both sand particles and air try to pass through the double deflection angle in a sand trap louver. But centrifugal forces prevent the dust particles from passing through the air can, separating all the dust. The dust and sand particles will accumulate in the bottom part of the louver. All the dust particles will be removed automatically through the holes.

The function of Vertical Blades

Both vertically arranged blades and holes at the bottom portion of a sand trap louver ensure the automatic separation of sand. But a sand trap louver is not an alternative for conventional or secondary stage filters. The function of a sand trap louver is to prevent the accumulation of dust particles in secondary filters. The blades in a sand trap louver are 1.5mm thick.

Sand Trap Louver With Bird Screen

  • High quality extruded Aluminium is used for making both the blade and frame of a sand trap louver. Hence, the louver will be rigid and resists corrosion.
  • The inverted U-channels are vertically placed in two opposite rows.
  • The bottom part of a sand trap louver contains holes, with 20mm diameter, which facilitates the drainage of dust and sand particles.
  • Contains a filter media- consisting of an aluminium filter and aluminium mesh.
  • The thickness of an extruded aluminium filter can be 12mm, 25mm and 50mm.
  • A sand trap louver can hold sand and dust particles and doesn’t block airflow. It works both at medium and high air velocity.
  • They are used as ventilation of inlet ducts in air conditioners.
  • It can separate sand and dust particles present in a large amount.

Sand Trap Louver Applications

  • General ventilation
  • Electrical substations
  • Onshore and Offshore purposes
  • Industrial and Commercial areas
  • Industrial and commercial duct systems
  • Building vents
  • Aviation industry
  • Parking area ventilation

Even though Sand Trap louvers require no maintenance, periodical inspection of blades for any wear and tear should be done. With time, dust and sand particles begin to accumulate in the sand trap louvers and should be cleaned every six months. The louvers should be cleaned immediately if it is exposed to chemicals. A sand trap louver can be cleaned using a gel cleaner and a clean, soft cloth. After the cleaning, the surface should be rinsed with water. In coastal areas, the louvers should be cleaned frequently. In areas that are not normally washed by rain, the louvers should be given particular care. Never use harsh cleaning liquid to clean louvers, since it can damage its surface.

Nowadays, there is a growing importance for sand trap louvers, acting as a pre-filter for conventional filters. Besides filtering dust and sand particles, a sand trap louver facilitates fresh air intake. Thus, a sand trap louver is an ideal option for dust filtration. It evades any damage caused to equipment and prevents clogging inside the filter.
